Electric vehicles from Stellantis brands in North America will use the SAE J3400 connector, also known as NACS, starting with some models in 2025.

Stellantis has announced the introduction of the new SAE J3400 charging connector starting with select models of battery electric vehicles that will be available in North America for the 2026 model year. During the transition period, Stellantis will also provide adapters for vehicles equipped with the CCS port.

SAE J3400 is also known as NACS (North American Charging Standard), a standard charging connector developed by Tesla. The latter opened NACS for free use by all interested companies in 2022.

Ford was the first to announce the switch to NACS. Then it was GM and almost all other automakers in the North American market. In December 2023, NACS was certified by the American Association of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The only major automaker that did not agree to use NACS remained Stellantis.

Now Stellatis has announced the switch to SAE J3400 / NACS as well. What's interesting, however, is that Stellantis is the only automaker to announce NACS implementation without mentioning Tesla or agreeing to use the Supercharger network of charging stations.

Instead, the automaker seems to be banking on its own recently announced IONNA charging station network planned for North America in partnership with BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz.

Stellantis mentions the new charging network several times in its press release about the NACS rollout.

IONNA stations will have both NACS and CCS connectors.
