BMW has demonstrated a customisable sound system for an electric car using the Vision Neue Klasse X concept car as an example. The same may appear in the next-generation BMW iX3.

Rather than providing a single soundtrack for the electric car or the ability to switch that track on and off, BMW has offered several different synthesised soundscapes. Each one is designed for a different mood and is controlled by a virtual dial that the automaker calls the Hypersonx Wheel.

There are four basic sounds in total: Calm (which BMW describes as relaxing and soothing), Free (light and open), Expressive (powerful and diverse) and Agile (dynamic and precise). The driver (or passenger) uses a finger to drag a flame-shaped cursor around the circle to select the most appropriate one. It's also interesting that the transition between sounds is seamless.

As we previously reported, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X is a precursor to a new electric crossover, probably the iX3. This vehicle will begin mass production in 2025 at BMW's plant in Hungary. Given that the concept car serves as a demonstrator of new approaches in design and technology, it cannot be ruled out that a similar system of tuning sounds will appear on the mass version of the electric BMW. Although the company itself does not confirm this directly.
