The preview video features a test drive in a prototype vehicle, likely a Lexus IS with a stripped-out interior. The new engine's sound is described as substantial and pleasant, emitting subtle pops and bangs on downshifts, especially as the revs build. Takashi Uehara, President of Toyota Powertrain, emphasizes the engine's responsiveness and excitement, noting its low positioning in the engine bay, which enhances the vehicle's center of gravity and chassis balance while minimizing vibrations for a refined driving experience.
Uehara mentions that the engine is designed for the era of electrification, intelligence, and diversification, producing very few emissions. Although there is no specific information on which cars will feature this engine, it seems well-suited for sports cars like the next GR86 or an entry-level GR Supra replacement.
Toyota's new four-cylinder engines will be available in two displacements: 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter. The 1.5-liter variant will come in naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, designed to replace the current 1.5-liter three-cylinder motor found in models like the Lexus LBX and Toyota Yaris Cross.
The compact size of the 1.5-liter engine allows for a more streamlined hood, improving fuel efficiency by up to 12% in sedan-style vehicles. The 2.0-liter engine, exclusively turbocharged, boasts 10% less volume than the current turbocharged 2.4-liter while being more powerful. This engine is expected to serve a wide range of applications, from trucks and heavy-duty vehicles to sports cars.
