Renault Group CEO, Luca de Meo, has confirmed the development of a new city car by Dacia. The electric car is scheduled for release in mid-2026 with a target price of less than 18,000 euros.

Unlike the Dacia Spring of a similar price category, which is produced in China by Dongfeng Renault, the new electric car will be manufactured in Europe. This will avoid customs duties imposed by the European Union on car imports from China.

In an interview with Autocar, Luca de Meo said that the new model will be created in a record time of 16 months, which allows expecting a launch in mid-2026. The Renault Group chief said the company has achieved "Chinese speed" in developing new cars after launching a research and development partnership with a Chinese consultancy for the Renault Twingo E-Tech project, adding, "I challenge any competitor in the world to do the same."

The new Dacia model, the name of which has not yet been announced, will share features with the Renault Twingo E-Tech and another affordable electric car currently being developed by Nissan. All three electric cars will be built on a shortened version of the AmpR Small architecture, formerly known as the CMF-BEV platform used in the Renault 5 E-Tech. The specialised electric vehicle platform is derived from the CMF-B platform that currently underpins Dacia's entire internal combustion engine range.

It remains unclear at this point whether the new Dacia electric car will be a direct replacement for the Spring model, which is still too young to be discontinued. It's worth noting that the next-generation Dacia Sandero hatchback will also be available in an all-electric version after 2027.
