The rear-wheel drive MG4 Electric hatchback boasted a range of up to 450 km (280 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

The MG4 Electric is the European version of the MG Mulan electric car that was unveiled in China earlier this month. Both cars are the brainchild of the Chinese concern SAIC Motor, which has created its own modular platform MSP (Modular Scalable Platform) for electric vehicles.

The dimensions of the MG4 Electric are very close to the Volkswagen ID.3: 4287 millimeters (168.8 in) long, 1835 mm (72.2 in) wide and only 1504 mm (59.2 in) high. According to MG, the five-door hatchback offers a comfortable and spacious cabin with enough room for a family of five.

The interior design is designed in the style of minimalism with the dominance of flat surfaces and smooth transitions. In front of the driver is a small dashboard display, in the center is a larger screen of the multimedia complex. The choice of driving modes is implemented due to the large washer on the original visor. There is also a wide area for a smartphone.

The relatively low height of the car is made possible by the original One Pack battery pack. At just 110 mm (4.3 in) block height, it is the flattest battery ever developed by SAIC Motor and supposedly the thinnest in its class. Horizontally arranged cells provide advantages in terms of interior space, weight and safety.

Zhu Jun, deputy chief engineer of SAIC Motor, said that with this battery arrangement, it is theoretically possible to obtain units with a capacity of 40 to 150 kWh. They will meet the needs of class A0 to D models, giving users the option to first buy a car with a small battery, and then, if more range is needed, replace it with another one.

Initially, the MG4 Electric battery will be offered in 51kWh and 64kWh configurations, providing a WLTP range of 350km (217 miles) and 450km (280 miles) respectively. The smaller battery powers the 125-kilowatt (170 hp) electric motor, while the larger battery powers the 150-kilowatt (204 hp) motor.

Regardless of battery capacity and engine power, the first MG4 Electrics will be exclusively rear-wheel drive. The more powerful variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 8 seconds and top speed is limited to 160 km/h. In the future, the MG4 Electric will have additional versions, including all-wheel drive.

Pre-production prototypes of the MG4 Electric are now being tested for endurance in various conditions. The start of sales in Europe is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2022.
