ZF Lifetec has unveiled the ACR8.S, a new active seat-integrated belt tensioner designed to enhance occupant safety and comfort.

The ACR8.S improves occupant positioning before a crash by using an electric drive unit to tighten the seatbelt during critical driving maneuvers, such as automatic emergency braking. This pre-crash adjustment helps position occupants better, reducing potential injuries. The electric drive unit also supports additional safety features, such as tightening the seatbelt for better support during dynamic driving and providing tactile warnings to prompt drivers to take control during automated driving.

In the event of an unavoidable crash, a pyrotechnic belt tensioner activates, pulling the occupant's upper body back towards the seat backrest in a fraction of a second. This guides the occupant towards the airbag, which absorbs the impact energy to prevent serious injuries. This tightening is irreversible and is triggered only during a severe accident.

The ACR8 series aims to enhance pre-crash behavior by reducing belt slack and positioning occupants ideally. Depending on the car manufacturer's philosophy and available sensors, the ACR8 can activate milliseconds before a potential collision.

Harald Lutz, Head of Development at ZF Lifetec, explains: “The ACR8 series combines conventional pyrotechnic functions with reversible electrical tensioning to increase safety in the pre-crash phase. The electronic control options also offer additional safety and comfort functions.”

The ACR8.S features a modular system with nine setup combinations. Key components include a webbing motion sensor and an electric drive unit, enabling haptic warnings and high-frequency pulsations to alert occupants of necessary interventions. These signals are more efficient than visual displays or LEDs, minimizing reaction time.

Beyond safety, the ACR8.S offers a comfort function that allows the belt to rest lightly against the body, enhancing comfort without restricting movement. Additionally, the ACR8.S can tighten the belt during sporty driving, using navigation data to provide better support.

This innovative seatbelt system represents a significant step forward in vehicle safety and comfort, ensuring that occupants are better protected and supported in various driving scenarios.
